小学校に通ってた時、お父さんの車の中でこの曲が流れていて、どう言う歌なのって聞いたら、お前の2人目の兄さんの歌だよって言われた。兄は1人しかいないのに。中学を卒業して初めて、自分には２人兄がいるはずだったって教えてもらった。もう1人の兄は流産だった。それを教えてもらってから毎年、兄の命日にこの曲を聞いてる。

高校時代に出会った親友は、とにかく一緒にいるのが楽しくて楽しくて毎日バカ笑いしてた。オレはギターに夢中で、親友はベースをやっていた。オレの持ってたギターを勝手に持ち出して弾けるようになったこの曲をオレに教えてくれた。オレが弾けるようになった頃、親友はバイク事故で天国に行った。絶対に忘れない。

エリック・クラプトンが「ティアーズ・イン・ヘブン」を作曲したのは、1991年3月20日に4歳の息子がアパートの53階から転落死したことがきっかけだった。 あの忌まわしい事故があったからこそ、マンハッタンのアパートには二度とこのような悲劇が起こらないように、すべての部屋に窓ガラスのガードが付いているのです。 私は当時、ベルビュー病院で医師をしていました。 この曲は、悲しむ父親が息子のために書いて演奏した、最も感動的な曲です。 当時、クラプトンは46歳だった。 クラプトンの音楽、歌、ギター演奏はより深く、より良くなっていった。彼の音楽は真のブルースとなり、クラプトンは彼の世代で最高のブルース・ギタリストとなった。
